I am a newbie in DIY-audio and I am thinking of building an Amp5 or Amp10? Which of these kits is the better choice and why? I want to use two amp's in bi-amp mode on a pair of B&W 805 signature.
I also want to know what kind of power supply I need to make for these amps, do I need something like the PS1? and do I also need an tranformer, and maybe also other parts? Can someone help me by answering my questions?

I've not done all of them, of course, but I'd think that 5 or 10 would be your best bet. They put out the power you'd need on a pair of 88db speakers. They are relatively easy to build and only need a box, transformer (22v, 300va or so), input, speaker, and power connections.

Choosing between amp5 and 10. I´d take the amp10. Its the more recent design and if you need a speaker output relay wait a few days for amp10basic.

What do you mean with a speaker output relay?

Relays disconnect the speakers from the amp. A good solution to prevent turn-on pops.

You just need a transformer for the Amp5/10. Power supply is on-board.

Ok, the overview on this page say that an Amp5/10 requiers +/- 35V does this mean that an transfomer like this one: http://www.bmm-electronics.nl/Product.asp?Product_ID=291 would be the correct one to use?
And how do i calculate the amount of VA that is needed?

hi steks

35V AC is much overrated.

Best choose a 22V AC (Will give you 30V DC), with 300VA, this will also allow use of 4ohm speakers

The 35V rails are measured in DC, to convert to AC its DC/1.414. This makes the absolute max AC secondary 24v. However, if your mains voltage is a little high or has swings, or the transformer isn't perfect it's possable to put the amp into over-voltage protection mode. Won't hurt the amp much but it purely ruins the listening...

Around here they mostly recommend a 22v 300va transformer. This produces a good voltage and is stiff enough for most uses. Jan has an equasion for calculating minimum VA in Toolbox / PSU. Just follow the menu.

Personally, I use a 22v 400va on my Amp5.

Try this one instead:

http://www.bmm-electronics.nl/Product.asp?Product_ID=167

or even this one:
http://www.bmm-electronics.nl/Product.asp?Product_ID=184

If you like to listen laud or have hard to drive speakers. There is a guy in the use who makes and sells them for roughly 2/3 those prices, however, with shipping and VAT, who knows what it would end up costing...

Thank you, as mentioned earlier i am planning to build 2 amp's so i can bi-amp my B&W 805's (8ohm), these aren't realy difficult speakers and i am not someone who plays realy load music, so i think 22V 300VA would be more than enough for me. The site may not be the cheapest but i used it because it's a dutch site wich can be set to english.
