View Full Version : Question on noise level, Truepath vs. Amp7

just curious.... which one of these two has more noise? (when driving 4 ohm loads)
Thanks :D
It depends on construction techniques - who the builder is.
There are several different methods to reduce the noise floor.

I have also included a ground lift switch, just in case....

what I meant is when everything else being equal (say, built by the same person, using similar power supplies, similar sheilding techniques, and driving the same speaker), which one has more noise? and how detectable is the noise floor?
(I was ready to order a Truepath, then found out the amp7 has higher current output and this higher current is supposedly good for the Magnepans).....
I am wondering about just the same, I have built several Truepath and AMP7 and theoretically the Truepath has advantages on noise prevention. Like the four layer board and all SMD components.
But there are other aspects that influence noise, like the gain setting. Only with two amps in direct comparison with all set to the same values you can compare. I have never had two with everything the same next to eachother, so I am not 100% sure which of these performs better....I am about to build another Truepath with exactly the same gain and components as my latest AMP7, probably I can't compare them side by side as I am building them for Anima and want to ship the AMP7 soon, but I do have a pretty good idea how much noise the AMP7 produces so I can certainly determine if there is a major difference....
------X-max. can be several meters on any driver, too bad it can be done only once...------
I have made extensive comparisons with scope measurements and hearing tests the past few days and I can only conclude both amps have the same noise level.
I also concluded that my AMP11 is quite a bit more silent than either Truepath and AMP7. This is something I noticed before on the AMP4 too, which is also VERY silent. I wonder if Audiophool's T-brick is going to change something to this....still waiting in great anticipation on the two kits I've ordered from him....
Still all these amps behave very well in respect to noise, I have compared to several other commercial amps (as many of you will know by now) and they all perform worse....( I'm talking Mark Levinson, Crest, Passlabs, Briston, Crown and Arcam here...)

thanks so much for the info, v-bro. I think I will get the Amp7 then.... :D

Okay I received the T-brick kits from Audiophool, they look great! Very well put together!
Can't wait to try them out!

V-Bro,
Any updates, impressions, or further thoughts on the T-brick? I am thinking seriously about ordering one of these as well.
I have had second thoughts related due to my final speaker selection as I might need Bi-amping in which case I would probably go with a AMP7 + Amp4 combo both running off a Redrocks SMPS.

Nope, first things first. I've got too many other projects going on for the coming days/weeks. But it is on my 'sort of' priority list...

Vbro,
Understood! I am in the same boat, but as a newbie, I am approaching things slowly as well. Lots of research and little progress. First I have to decide on the speakers, then the amp.
I may just go forward with the T-brick, as I could always go with T-brick + AMP4 or Amp7 +T-brick if I need bi-amping.
I really like the layout, funcionality, and form factor that Audiophool has put together on the T-brick.
He also has a completly assembled and tested option which is dirt cheap for what you get.
When you get around to the T-brick and have something to share please start a new thread with your impression.
Thanks
Mark
Hi Mark, yes it is a very attractive package. I would certainly go with the T-brick, can't really go wrong judging from the schematic and the parts I see in the bags. The connectors are also quite handy and solid. It all looks very professional, as expected from someone like Audiophool...
Nice features I find are the speaker relay with timed shut off/on to prevent pops and provide extra protection for the speakers. And the 5V is a bit more close-up. And of course the form factor.
