Hello,
Old timer looking to update SS amp.

I find the AMP15 very convenient (as a single board solution). Quite possibly, the XP - more current for the same price... (really not for the power, I will feed it from a lower voltage).

Opinions on it, pls, for decent volume listening (not disco levels) on fairly efficient speakers (MTM TLs)

Question - board dimensions?

Thanks, takt,

Hi, it is 160x100mm...

It's a very good amplifier, although you might have enough power with an AMP4 already and that amp being lower in power will have a slight advantage in noise figures...

It'll also be smaller and less costly (especially the power supply) and also a one board solution....

But AMP4 is SMD

Eyes, hands today won't allow me to solder tiny parts...

Thanks,

I see... oh well... I have an AMP15 in my car with a home brewed switch mode power supply that makes +/-35Vdc out of 12V and the thing sound absolutely stunning. I can only say you will have one of the greatest amplifiers available with it...

One more question (I'm looking to keep the enclosure I have today): the lengt of the large electrolytics?

Ah ok, from my head I think they are about 100mm tall... But they can be a lot smaller when you use an SMPS power supply. It is also possible to lay them flat...

Thanks. Before retiring, I've designed some SMPS for telecom applications.
But today my bench is just a table and the PC...

I will keep the standard PS, quite possiby with horizontal lytics.

Okay, but off course we are curious, what SS amp is it and what kind of power supply does it have?

It's a classic circuit - differential input, current source, complementary output (very much Douglas Self style), 50W PC

The PS is a toroidal trafo, bridge rectifiers and large lytics. Nothing fancy, inside a PA amp housing.

I will purchase a new trafo for the AMP15.

You should consider buying new lytics as well.
As you probably already know, the lytics will dry out over age and lose their capacity.

I'm rebuilding an old Bryston 4B amp from 1987 with an AMP2 and have bought all new caps.
The rectifiers were well worn so I replaced those as well.

New lytics will come with the AMP15 Scratchy....

Complementary eh? These quickly tend to feature bad crossover distortion... That IS an oldfashioned amp!!

New lytics will come with the AMP15 Scratchy....

Of course, how silly of me. It even comes with new rectifiers.
Just add AC and you are done. What could be simpler...
