View Full Version : Recycled transformer for AMP7 or AMP15-PS-XP?
I robbed a trafo out of an older home theater reciever. I don't know if it has enough power though. Is there a good way of telling? It's laminate core, about 9lbs, the receiver was rated on the back for 250W at 120v or what ever v rating it was, standard US wall current. No load it puts out 41vac if I remember right. Does this sound like enough? Any guesses on how many watts this thing will actually transform?
Thanks,
Bryan
41VAC is getting on the high side for these amps = 58VDC, but still managable.
What type of trafo is it - Toroid or EI core?
It's an EI iron laminated thing, not a toroid. That was a not load, not even a rectifier hooked up, 41VAC. I tested it while I was at work and I think the line voltage runs high there, around 125VAC. I should check the wall voltage here at home, it may be lower.

The voltage is an issue because it does seem a little underpowered. The amp will run on it, but for an AMP7 you need 1000W minimally and for an AMP15-PS-XP you need at least 600W...
Two of those transformers might be just enough to run the AMP15-PS-XP at up to moderate level....
