    Default How to choose amp

    Hi,
I'm not shure of wich amp I should choose. The speakers I'm planning to use it for has the following specs:

    Impedans: 5 ohm
    Continous effect: 25W
    Sensitivity: 87dB - 2,83V
    Recommended amp: 10-50W
    Tone curve: 34 - 21 000 Hz / +-2,5 dB

I will use the speakers for studio application, so I need something as accurate and neutral as possible.
I was thinking of the AMP4, AMP5 or 2x AMP11. I'm not sure if the power of AMP6 will be enough.

    Any advice is welcome.

    /Daniel

These are manufacturers specs, they don't tell me that much about how the speakers sound. Can you show a picture, or at least tell what kind of drivers it uses and what kind of enclosure has been used?

87db sensitivity is not a lot, two AMP11 would be great ofcourse... But many find the AMP6 quite loud enough.....

AMP4 is not an option, the impedance of your speakers is to low...

AMP5 is nice, but AMP10 is also one to have a look at.

Do you want to build the amps inside the speakers? (go 'active'...)

Than the AMP10 basic could be nice because it takes only little space....

------X-max. can be several meters on any driver, too bad it can be done only once...------

I would rather build one of the 100w ta2022 amps (amp1,5 or 10) and know it had the power than build an amp3 or 6 and then find it couldnt handle it.

The amp 4 can run low impediance speakers (according to build pdf) if you lower the rail voltage below about 24v. This seems to be because its current limit may kick in at higher rail voltage with lower impediance speakers. Still, I'd go for a higher power amp anyway, just to be sure

Hey Bootcut, have you ever built an amp before?

AMP4 can drive lower impedance, but it will diminish the benefit of low distortion. It will neither give you the headroom it can give at 30V. It won't perform much better than AMP6 when used in that way...Maybe it will be a tiny bit better, but in exchange for a much more complex build and more expensive power supply/kit...

AMP9 could be nice, especially when they are two way speakers, than bi-amping is a good option with the four channels... (this would mean you have to separate the filter...except for when your speakers already feature the option....)

------X-max. can be several meters on any driver, too bad it can be done only once...------
