    Default My first build ever!

    Hello!

I'm TOTALLY new in bulding electronics. But you got to start somewhere, and I got a tip of some guy to go for a AMP6. I ordered it, and started to build it as best I could. So here is some questions I hope someone could help me with:

    1. I want to use my AMP6 build as a headphone amplifier. Is this possible? And what do I need to make it happend? I only have the parts that was included in the kit.

    2. Viewing the photo section on this forum. I see most people have added a toroidal power transformer (copy and pasted from photo album page) to their build. What is the point of this? And why should I get one for my build?

Probably most people that read this will think I'm stupid for even starting this prodject with my skill level. But I'm hoping someone is willing to give me a helping hand.

None of the 41Hz kits are really suitable as headphone amps. I would suggest looking for something based on the LM386 or something similar. These will be much lower power ( 1/4 watt or so ) but that's all you need for headphones.

Regarding the toroid, that is for the larger kits. Most of the high-wattage amps require positive and negative voltage supplies around +/-20V or more... The amp6 basic does not require this. As far as I know the only other kit to run off as single +12V rail is the AMP9(B).

    Thanks for the reply armstrom.

I guess that I will change my plan for the use of my amp6

But I will finish it anyway, I have some smaller monitors that I can use it on.

Is it the same for amp6, the none basic version?

Hi, it isn't impossible to use this amp as headphone amp, but not ideal either and it could perhaps be a bit complicated to adapt the amp or headphones to make it work well...

The AMP6 non basic version has a voltage regulator on board to make it work on a wider voltage range (and slightly higher voltage too), the kit is supplied with several different resistor values to adapt it and the assembly instructions describe what will happen... It is possible to bypass this regulator as well (than the voltage range is the same as the 6-basic or AMP32), let us know if you want to and need an explanation on how to do this....

------X-max. can be several meters on any driver, too bad it can be done only once...------

As for the toroid I used for my AMP6, I purchased 5 - 12Volt 50VA toroids about 15 years ago for $5 each, so I just used what I had.
You don't need a Toroid transformer for any of these kits.
Toroids are more efficient and have less hum and stray magnetic fields than standard laminated core transformers, so they are preferred for high end audio.

    Thanks alot for the replys!

Can't wait to get it finished up, but I noticed that I was missing some parts from my BOM, so I have to wait till I get 2x 0,01 uF Output EMI suppression caps.

I'll look into the buying a toroid myself, but first I have to find out if I can get it working or not, same as with casing and connections.

I finished up my amp6 (the soldering) and was going to try it out, all I had was a DC adapter with was 12V at 50MA. I connected a jumper from rectifier to Q3 (first mistake since I didnt remove it).

Then I did the my second mistake [:I] and put the power to the jusmper connection. [:I][:0] then I tried to reconnect the power to the right place, but now nothing happends. Did I blow my amp when I hooked the power on to the jumper?
