    Default Music

Got a pair of really nice Amp11's going a couple of nights ago. Going through music, old and new. Some albums are revealing new sides ...

    - Thelonious Monk - It's Monk's Time (1964). There's something about Thelonious monk that absolutely requires a good sound system. I thought Monk was abrasive; He's not! The music is pure emotion. It feels like the slight dissonance in the music will simply crack if the system can't handle delivering it. However, with Tripaths, and probably valve amps too, we hear that this music is always fresh. There will always be this edge to it that the system must be able to handle.

    - The Field - Looping State Of Mind (2011) - Electronic. Long, beautifully repetitive tracks that segue slowly into curveball twists. It is mastery. Ten-minute tracks that never let go long enough for you to become conscious of their duration.

    - PJ Harvey - Let England Shake (2011). Man alive this album is beautiful.

    Digital Samsara, very relaxing!

Eddy Vedder on his 'Into the Wild' album, that crispy voice and the pureness is amazing!

And of the good old goldies I still love Donovan's 'Hurdy Gurdy man' and 'Get thy Bearings'

God is an Astronaut, nice dramatic rock.

And I love most of Porcupine Tree, especially the tracks that have that Pink Floyd feel to it...

And for those who love a pumping beat check out Time lock, especially the track 'Helion Prime' rocks the planet!!

The new Beirut Album, The Rip Tide (2011) also sounds ab-so-lutely beautiful. Soft as a stream of custard, with live-band dynamics.

Great music getting the production work and mastering it deserves. There's a lot of really really superbly made new music coming out.

90s classic: Maurizio - M4,5. It's better when pitched down by 4% or so though ...

Just came across this thread and want to recommend a new band from Los Angeles called Vintage Trouble.

    http://www.vintagetrouble.com/ (Group website)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pDr7cQgTHk (Nobody Told Me)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dj29oFpcfNA (Run Outa You)

Actually was listening to Otis Redding this morning and it just occured to me that the singer for this band sounds like him. :-)

In the early '90s, the French game company Cryo Interactive released the game DUNE, based on Frank Herbert's deep and beautiful science fiction books. The game is very unusual, especially in its art direction, mood, and most importantly music.

The soundtrack is composed by Stéphane Picq and is engineered specially for the Yamaha YMF262 frequency modulation synthesizer chip, also known as the OPL3, found in the old AdLib sound card and early Sound Blasters. It's a quite interesting chip, doing very analog-sounding FM synthesis in the digital domain, actually running at a sample rate of 49716 Hz internally.

The soundtrack itself is a 30-minute long piece, all in all. It's hard to classify, but can perhaps best be described as very complex electro.

It is a timeless classic. It's actually kind of sad that this piece of music is "a soundtrack", because many will overlook it.

Do play in 720p. The recording here is a tiny little bit harsh in the high mids, but still has a very unique and dynamic sound when played back on a good system. It benefits from a little EQ bump in the lower bass.

It's fascinating to think that every single tiny sound was handcrafted by a single guy, working with a relatively complex Japanese synthesis chip through a rather limiting interface. But most importantly, the composition rises above even the incredible sound engineering.

May not be everyone's cup of tea, but God it's gorgeous.

Nicolas Jaar - Space Is Only Noise

Sounds simply sublime, start to finish.

    edit:

Wow, this is one I'll have to look into, sounds great after just a swift youtube listen. I listened to the title track, any others in particular that you'd recommend off the album?
