Default MY AMP6 WORKED FINE WITH A LM338K REGULATOR!

Friends I was asking about a regulated power supply for the Tripath amp (AMP6) and tested it with a power suply using a Toroid, 18V 4A regulated with a LM338K variable regulator (5A max).It worked fine. At first I tested with a LM317 but it did not work [xx(](it was supposed to work, however, people here in the Forum say the amps need regulators that works from less than 1A or less). I think that the LM338K is very appropriate for the amps. But check the amps of the ones you need and the voltages. LM338K can give 5A but does not works on more than 32 or aproximate volts.
I am happy at the way my amplifier sounds.
If you are interested in making one power supply see the information at National Semiconductor, or ask me if you want me to draw a schematic to post here. I cannot guarantee you anything, but at least I am having a AMP6 working.

HERE IS THE SCHEMATIC OF THE POWER SUPPLY, IN GENERAL TERMS. 18V AC TOROIDAL TRANSFORMER USED, 10A BRIDGE, 4,700mF FILTER, ETC. The regulated ouput goes to the amplifier B+ source. SEE MY PHOTO ALBUM IN THIS FORUM.

You may laugh, but for my power supply, I'm using the power adaptor from my old modem. It outputs 16vac up to 2amp, for testing I just snipped the connector off the end and solered the wires to the board. It doesn't even have a ground lol.

Yes, and while I constructed the Regulated Power Supply (LM338K based) I also used a wall one, 12 volts 300ma, It sounded good, but you need power, this is the key here.

How many amps do you recommend?

I think, I don't remember now, the IC is capable of 4AMPS, but if it is only 2AMPS, there will be plenty of extra power for surges, provided we maintain the safe voltage limits.

I like to use a regulated SMPS, I have AMP9 and AMP32 and use either 12V/4A SMPS, 12V/8A SMPS, 15V/10A SMPS (only for AMP9), 12V/10A linear regulated PSU (toroidal transformer based) or batteries varying from 12V/45A SLA, 12V/12A SLA, 12V 6A NiCAD...

The SMPS supplies change the sound very dramatically, the lower frequencies sound really controlled and true...The higher regions seem to let you go even deeper into the 3D image... Even my grandmother hears the difference in a blind test, hahah!

X-max. can be several meters on any driver, too bad it can be done only once...
